AUT students benefitfrom Astle’s support

Tony Astle
At his memoir launch, Tony Astle gifted proceeds to AUT’s Student Support Fund, continuing his long commitment to hospitality students.
Tony Astle, founder of the legendary Antoine’s restaurant, launched his memoir Let Them Eat Tripe at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) on October 10, celebrating his remarkable legacy in New Zealand’s hospitality scene.
The event brought together industry leaders, loyal patrons, and former colleagues to honour Astle’s decades of influence. Known for his exacting standards and flair for fine dining, Astle has long been a supporter of AUT and its School of Hospitality & Tourism, recognising the importance of nurturing future talent in the industry he helped shape.
In a generous gesture, some items were auctioned at the launch, with proceeds going to AUT’s Student Support Fund. The donation will help hospitality students facing financial hardship, reinforcing Astle’s commitment to giving back and supporting the next generation of culinary professionals.
The AUT Foundation acknowledges Tony Astle’s enduring support and generosity, which continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students. His contribution reflects the powerful role industry leaders can play in shaping educational opportunities and strengthening the future of hospitality in Aotearoa.
Let Them Eat Tripe, co-authored with journalist Geraldine Johns, offers a vivid account of Astle’s journey—from a fiery young chef in New Brighton to a mentor and icon of New Zealand dining. The book is both a tribute to a storied career and a reminder of the lasting impact one individual can have on an entire industry.
