In 2024, AUT laid the groundwork for a bold new initiative that will help shape the next generation of leaders, the Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Programme, which launched in 2025. Spearheaded by Vice Chancellor Damon Salesa, the programme is designed to support AUT’s highest achieving students, those who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in their communities.

This vision has been made possible through the generous support of the McCall MacBain Foundation, whose belief in education and leadership has helped bring the programme to life. The AUT Foundation has played a central role in the development of the initiative, working closely with university leadership and donor partners to create a programme that reflects AUT’s values and aspirations.

Through mentorship, community engagement and tailored development opportunities, scholars will be supported to grow as individuals and as future leaders for Aotearoa and the world.

We welcome the inaugural cohort with gratitude and excitement. This is more than a programme, it is a platform for possibility, and a testament to what can be achieved when visionary leadership is paired with generous partnership.

The Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Programme aspires to do more than recognise academic excellence, it aims to equip students with the tools, networks and experiences to lead with integrity and vision.
