Support AUT’s Maria Rameka Memorial Fund

The Maria Rameka Memorial Fund supports Māori students undertaking a nursing qualification, helping to grow a strong, culturally grounded nursing workforce for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Maria Rameka, BAppSc Philip IT Melb., MN Massey, PgDipNurs, RN, was a deeply respected AUT teacher and researcher whose impact spanned more than 30 years. Beginning her career with AUT’s predecessor, AIT, Maria was widely recognised for her expertise in clinical practice, including surgical and theatre nursing.

Beyond her clinical excellence, Maria was a passionate advocate for Māori-led practice, cultural safety, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Her teaching and leadership shaped generations of AUT nursing graduates, leaving a legacy that continues to influence care, practice, and equity across the health sector.

In honour of her life and contribution, the Maria Rameka Memorial Fund for Nursing Education was established. A kōwhai tree—chosen for its special significance to Maria and her partner, Len—has also been planted at AUT’s North Campus as a living tribute to her memory.

This fund is designed to grow over time through the collective generosity of donors. Its purpose is enduring: to provide ongoing support for Māori nursing students, ensuring Maria’s legacy continues to uplift future generations.
